About Your Tutor

Abby Hook is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning jewellery designer and author of the bestselling instructional book Wire Jewelry Masterclass.

Working from her London studio, Abby creates distinctive handcrafted jewellery using traditional wireworking and metalsmithing techniques. Her designs explore the expressive and structural possibilities of wire, drawing inspiration from nature, history and the character of the materials themselves.

Discover the Art of Viking Knit

Explore the ancient art of Viking knit, also known as Trichinopoly chain, a traditional wire-weaving technique with roots stretching back many centuries.

In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to transform lengths of wire into beautiful, flexible woven chains using techniques inspired by historical jewellery making.

Perfect for complete beginners, this five-hour class will guide you through the process step by step, from your first stitches to creating and finishing your own jewellery.

What You'll Learn

We'll begin with an introduction to the tools, how to use them safely and the techniques you'll need.

You'll then learn how to create the starter 'daisy' and build your Viking knit chain, including how to add new lengths of wire securely while keeping the joins almost invisible.

Once your chain is complete, you'll learn how to draw it down through a drawplate to create a smooth, flexible finish.

We'll also explore how to finish your jewellery, including making decorative wire cones, hook clasps, figure-of-eight links and wrapped loops.

During the workshop, you'll learn:

  • Tool handling and basic safety

  • Creating the starter daisy and weaving Viking knit

  • Adding new wire and creating secure joins

  • Drawing down your woven chain

  • Forming decorative end caps

  • Making hook clasps and connecting links

  • Creating wrapped loops and other finishing details

You'll be able to choose between copper and silver-plated wire.

By the end of the workshop, you should have a finished bracelet to take home, together with the materials and knowledge to complete a matching necklace at your leisure.
